Tokyo Revengers Mini Anime: Fairy Tale Revengers Now Available with English Subtitles
The official Tokyo Revengers YouTube channel has released a special mini-anime series called Fairy Tale Revengers (or Dōwa Revengers). This mini-series gives the characters from Tokyo Revengers a new twist, placing them in the world of famous fairy tales. Each story reimagines the Tokyo Revengers cast in roles based on well-known tales.
The first story, which spans three episodes, is inspired by the popular Japanese folktale Momotarō. This tale typically follows a boy born from a giant peach who grows up to become a hero, but Tokyo Revengers gives it a fresh take, weaving in its own characters and themes. Fans can watch these episodes on YouTube in Japanese, with English subtitles available to enjoy the story globally.
Tokyo Revengers Overview
Tokyo Revengers originally comes from a manga by Ken Wakui, which was a major hit in Japan. The story centers on Takemichi Hanagaki, a down-on-his-luck guy who discovers on the news that his former middle school girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, has been killed by a gang called the Tokyo Manji Gang. Takemichi’s life feels bleak; he has a rough job, lives in a shabby apartment, and feels stuck.
However, he suddenly finds himself transported 12 years back in time to his middle school days. Now, he has a chance to change the past, save Hinata, and face the gang that will eventually lead to her death. Determined, Takemichi sets out to climb to the top of the gang, hoping to protect those he cares about.
The Tokyo Revengers anime first aired in April 2021 and became popular worldwide, with Crunchyroll streaming it internationally. A later arc, Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown, premiered in January 2023 and ran for 13 episodes, with Disney+ and Hulu picking up the streaming rights. Following this, a new anime arc called the Tenjiku Arc started in Japan in October 2023, with Disney+ streaming it for audiences outside Mainland China.
Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from March 2017 until November 2023. Due to its success, the story also got a live-action adaptation. The first live-action film was a huge hit in Japan in 2021, followed by sequels released in 2023.
With the release of Fairy Tale Revengers, fans of Tokyo Revengers now get a playful, creative take on the series’ characters, blending Japanese folklore and familiar tales with the gritty world of Tokyo's gang conflicts.
