Record of Ragnarok Gets New Spinoff Manga: The Gods Finally Speak!
The July issue of Coamix's Comic Zenon magazine announced an exciting development for fans of the Record of Ragnarok series: a new spinoff manga titled Shūmatsu no Walküre Kinden: Kamigami no Apocalypse (Record of Ragnarok Forbidden Tale: Apocalypse of the Gods) is set to debut in the August issue on June 25. This new addition to the franchise will be drawn by Ippei Okamoto with the story by Otsuhiko Naruse. Notably, this spinoff will be the first in the Record of Ragnarok series to be told from the perspective of the gods, offering a fresh narrative angle.
The original Record of Ragnarok (Shūmatsu no Walküre) manga, created by Shinya Umemura, Ajichika, and Takumi Fukui, has garnered significant attention and popularity since its launch in November 2017 in Comic Zenon magazine. Umemura writes the story, Ajichika provides the artwork, and Fukui is credited with the composition. The manga's gripping plot centers on the gods convening every millennium to decide humanity's fate. When the gods decree humanity's destruction, the ultimate battle—Ragnarok—between gods and mortal heroes ensues to determine the survival or extinction of the human race.
Expanding of Record of Ragnarok
The series has expanded its universe through various spinoffs. In October 2022, Keita Iizuka launched Shūmatsu no Walküre Kitan: Jack the Ripper no Jikenbo (Record of Ragnarok Mystery - The Case Files of Jack the Ripper) in Comic Zenon magazine.
This spinoff explores a unique narrative focused on the infamous historical figure Jack the Ripper within the context of the Record of Ragnarok universe. Additionally, Takeo Ono created another spinoff manga, Ryo Fu Hō Sen Hishōden (The Legend of Lu Bu Fengxiang The Flying General), which began in October 2019 and concluded with its seventh volume in November 2022.
This series delved into the legendary exploits of the Chinese warlord Lu Bu, providing readers with a deeper understanding of his character. Coamix and Imagineer's MangaHot app have made this manga available in English under the title The Legend of Lu Bu.
The Record of Ragnarok series also achieved success with its anime adaptation. The first season premiered on Netflix in June 2021, bringing the intense battles and intricate storylines of the manga to life. The second season, titled Record of Ragnarok II, released its first part on Netflix in January 2023, followed by the second part (episodes 11-15) on July 12, 2023.
Viz Media is responsible for releasing the main manga series in English, making it accessible to a broader audience. The series has captivated readers with its high-stakes battles and philosophical questions about humanity's worthiness to exist.
Overall, the announcement of the new spinoff manga Shūmatsu no Walküre Kinden: Kamigami no Apocalypse adds another layer to the expansive and richly detailed universe of Record of Ragnarok. By exploring the viewpoint of the gods, this new narrative promises to offer fans deeper insights and fresh perspectives on the epic battles and divine deliberations that define the series.
