Poupelle of Chimney Town Returns: Sequel Film Set for Spring 2026
Fans of Poupelle of Chimney Town, get ready! A sequel to the beloved 2020 anime film has officially been announced. Titled Entotsu-machi no Poupelle ~ Yakusoku no Tokeidai (which translates to Poupelle of Chimney Town: The Promised Clocktower), the new movie is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan in the spring of 2026.
Just like the original film, the sequel will be directed by Yusuke Hirota and produced by the acclaimed STUDIO4℃, known for their stunning animation. Toho and CHIMNEY TOWN will handle distribution once again, continuing the same team that brought the first film to life.
The announcement came with some exciting extras: a special teaser video and a brand-new illustration by the story’s creator, Akihiro Nishino. The artwork features the main character, Lubicchi — the ragged boy in a top hat — sitting alone on a chimney ledge, gazing up at a starry sky. It gives a nostalgic and emotional vibe that hints at another heartwarming adventure ahead.
Poupelle of Chimney Town Story
The original Poupelle of Chimney Town movie, based on Nishino’s picture book, followed the story of Lubicchi and his unlikely friend Poupelle, a man made of garbage. Trapped in a town covered by smoke and chimneys, Lubicchi dreamed of seeing the stars his father always told him about. The film stood out for its breathtaking visuals, emotional storytelling, and beautiful soundtrack.
In the U.S., the film was released on digital and Blu-ray by Shout! Factory, making it more accessible to international audiences. The movie earned praise for its meaningful message, inspiring characters, and imaginative world.
Now, with the sequel on the way, fans are eager to see where the story goes next. Will Lubicchi finally uncover more secrets beyond the smoky skies? What role does the mysterious clocktower play? While many details are still under wraps, the return of the original director and studio is a promising sign that the sequel will be just as magical and moving as the first.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the 2026 release. Until then, you can revisit the original film and relive the emotional journey that captured so many hearts.
