Netflix's One Piece Season 2 Set to Rewrite the Canon!
Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation revealed some thrilling updates for fans during this year’s Geeked Week. Along with a sneak peek at Tony Tony Chopper’s debut in the upcoming second season, it was announced that Joe Manganiello and Lera Abova will portray Crocodile and Nico Robin, respectively.
In a behind-the-scenes video released by the streaming giant, eagle-eyed fans spotted an intriguing location that ties back to One Piece history but has never appeared in the manga. This discovery is sparking speculation about the new content Netflix might introduce in the highly anticipated Season 2.
Filler in Shonen Anime Series
While Eiichiro Oda’s original manga is expansive, the One Piece anime has, at times, created original stories and characters to allow the manga to continue its development. Often referred to as "filler," these episodes provide new adventures for the Straw Hats. One Piece isn’t the only anime to employ filler arcs; other shonen giants like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, and Demon Slayer have all created exclusive anime content not found in the manga. These additional stories help keep anime fans engaged while maintaining the pacing of the manga.
Hand Island Becomes Netflix Canon
Hand Island, a locale that first appeared in the special television episode “One Piece: Episode of Luffy – Adventure on Hand Island,” has never been a part of Oda’s manga. This special aired alongside One Piece: Film Z and served as a build-up to the movie. Similarly, original episodes focusing on Luffy’s past friendship with Uta were created to promote One Piece: Film Red. Now, with the appearance of Hand Island on a map in a behind-the-scenes clip, fans are left to speculate whether this island will make its way into the live-action series.
Season 2’s Iconic Locations
Although Hand Island has been spotted, it’s not guaranteed to appear in Season 2. Showrunner Matt Owens and Eiichiro Oda confirmed that the Straw Hats will journey to iconic locations like Drum Island, Loguetown, Little Garden, and Whiskey Peak.
Production for the second season is underway in Cape Town, South Africa, but no official release date has been confirmed. While One Piece won’t return in 2024, fans can expect Season 2 to possibly hit Netflix in 2025. Stay tuned for updates as Luffy and his crew prepare for their next adventure.
