GUNDAM is Getting a New Anime with Evangelion's Creator!
Sunrise, the studio behind Mobile Suit Gundam, has just unveiled an exciting announcement: a brand-new series in the legendary mecha franchise called Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
This marks a historic collaboration between Sunrise and Khara, the animation studio founded by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The special announcement trailer for the series debuted on the Gundam Info YouTube channel, giving fans a glimpse of the stunning mobile suit designs and intriguing main characters.
Trailer and Story Overview
The story of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX centers on Amate Yuzuriha, a high school student who becomes involved in an underground mobile suit dueling after encountering Nyaan, a war refugee. Under the alias “Machu,” Amate pilots the titular GQuuuuuuX in the illegal dueling ring. Along the way, she meets Shuji, a boy wanted by both the police and space force. The series is set in a space colony, a setting reminiscent of classic Gundam shows, though it’s unclear if it shares continuity with earlier timelines.
The creative team behind the series is just as thrilling as its premise. Hideaki Anno, who revolutionized the mecha genre with Evangelion, is co-writing the script alongside Yoki Enokido. Character designs come from an illustrator known for Katanagatari and Pokémon Sun & Moon, while the mecha designs are handled by Ikuto Yamashita, a veteran designer from the Evangelion series. This collaboration marks Anno’s first official work on a Gundam project, a significant milestone given how the original Gundam inspired Evangelion.
Before its television premiere in Japan, the first few episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will be screened in Japanese theaters on January 17, 2025. The GQuuuuuuX mobile suit is already making waves, with Bandai Namco Filmworks showcasing a highly articulated High Grade 1/144 model in a recent commercial.
This collaboration between Sunrise and Khara brings together two giants of the anime industry. Khara is known for its work on the Rebuild of Evangelion films and Anno’s live-action projects like Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. For Anno, this project is a full-circle moment, as Gundam was a major influence on his career.
With Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, Sunrise continues to innovate within the franchise, following the success of The Witch from Mercury and Gundam Seed Freedom. Fans of both Gundam and Evangelion have plenty to look forward to in this groundbreaking new series.
