Everything We Know About The Apothecary Diaries Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, and Plot Details
The Apothecary Diaries! Season 2 is set to premiere on January 10, 2025, as part of the Winter 2025 anime lineup. Toho Animation has released a new trailer with English subtitles, giving us a sneak peek into the mysteries that await.
Background of the Series
The story resumes with the arrival of spring in the rear palace, bringing joy—until a mysterious smell in the northern area hints at poison. Maomao, the intelligent and sharp-witted apothecary, takes on the challenge of unraveling a dangerous conspiracy. Expect plenty of intrigue, mystery, and Maomao’s clever problem-solving as the stakes rise within the palace walls.
The anime is based on Natsu Hyuga’s web novel, which started on Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2011. It was later adapted into a light novel series published by Shufunotomo in 2014. In English, J-Novel Club handles the digital release, while Square Enix takes care of the print editions.
The series also has two manga adaptations: A 14-volume manga by Nekokurage, serialized since 2017. Maomao’s Notes from the Inner Palace, illustrated by Minoji Kurata.
The first season of the anime aired in October 2023, directed by Norihiro Naganuma, and was praised for its rich historical setting and intriguing characters. Season 2, however, will see Akinori Fudesaka taking over as director.
IGN U.S. gave Season 1 a solid 8/10, praising its protagonist and the complex palace dynamics.
The anime is available on Crunchyroll, offering English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs, making it perfect for a global audience.
Synopsis for Season 2
As tensions rise, Maomao must navigate a maze of dangers: protecting a pregnant concubine, surviving an assassination plot against Jinshi, and dealing with a foreign envoy’s impossible demands. The palace is rife with secrets, and Maomao’s intellect will be tested like never before as she uncovers a conspiracy that could shake the empire.
Season 2 will stream on Netflix (Asia) and Crunchyroll (outside Asia), making it accessible to fans worldwide. The opening theme, “Hyakkaryouran” by Lilas Ikuta, adds to the excitement and is featured in the trailer.
